What is a number line?

  • A number line is a continuous line with smaller lines marked along it at equally spaced intervals. Each of the lines represent a measurement.

  • Number lines are used frequently in everyday life. For example, rulers, thermometers and scales all feature number lines.

  • Number lines can be used to convert between different units of measure.

What are number lines used for?

We use number lines all the time, from the weighing scales in our bathroom, to the depth indicator at our local swimming pool. Typically you use them to measure length, temperature or weight, but you can use them to measure other things like pressure too.
