What is a fraction?

A fraction means a part of something or a number of parts of something.

There are two parts to a fraction:

  • The number on top shows how many parts there are
  • The number on the bottom shows how many parts something has been divided into

½ means 1 part of something that has been divided into 2 parts.

We call this a half.

If you add two halves together you get one.

½ + ½ = 1

One pizza divided into two halves.

means 1 part of something that has been divided into 3 parts.

We call this a third.

If you add three thirds together you get one.

⅓ + ⅓ + ⅓ = 1

¼ means 1 part of something that has been divided into 4 parts.

We call this a quarter.

If you add four quarters together you get one.

¼ + ¼ + ¼ + ¼ = 1
