Wemmick

Wemmick

John Wemmick is Mr Jaggers' chief clerk and therefore knows a lot about the law. He organises Jaggers' work schedule and collects the money he is owed in fees. When Pip first arrives in London, Wemmick takes Pip to Newgate prison which gives him a taste of the poor conditions in which prisoners lived. Later, Wemmick is able to help Pip when he is planning Magwitch's escape from England.

Wemmick has a split personality. At work, he is professional, business-like and can be quite a bully. At home (which is in the form of a miniature castle), he is kind, caring and fun-loving. Pip almost thinks that the two Wemmicks must be a pair of identical twins. Wemmick displays characteristics of both Joe and Mr Jaggers.

How is Wemmick like this?EvidenceAnalysis
Careful with moneyWemmick has a fairly comfortable life but is not a rich man so is always looking for a way to make money."It don't signify to you with your brilliant look-out, but as to myself, my guiding-star always is, 'Get hold of portable property.'"Wemmick collects small items of value which could quickly be turned into cash. He calls this his 'portable property'. This suggests that he thinks ahead.
Hard-workingWemmick manages Mr Jaggers' business affairs, collects the fees he is owed, visits his clients in Newgate prison and does all the jobs around his own home. He also aids Pip in helping Magwitch to escape."I am my own engineer, and my own carpenter, and my own plumber, and my own gardener, and my own Jack of all Trades," said Wemmick, in acknowledging my compliments. "Well; it's a good thing, you know. It brushes the Newgate cobwebs away."Wemmick can turn his hand to all manner of things successfully and provides Pip with a good example of how hard work pays off. He keeps busy at home in order to keep the worst elements of his working life out of his thoughts.
