Many people suffer with the consequences of extreme poverty, particularly in the developing world. Many Catholics believe that people should use their wealth to help those who have less.
What is absolute poverty?
When someone has enough money for food and clothing but not for luxuries
When someone is not as well off as most people in their country
When someone does not have enough money to meet their basic human needs
Why are countries LEDCs?
They have a large income due to technology and industry
They do not have enough industry or technology for their people to make a living
They have a lot of natural resources that they can make use of
Why are natural disasters particularly bad for people living in LEDCs?
These disasters create more natural resources they cannot exploit
Other countries do not try to help them after the disaster
They do not have any defences against these disasters
Why is being in debt bad for an LEDC?
A lot of the money it earns has to be used to pay off interest on the debt rather than on education or healthcare for its citizens
It cannot buy luxuries
It cannot buy weapons
What is fair trade?
A movement to ensure fair prices for farmers in LEDCs
A movement to ensure large profits for large multinational companies
A movement that makes people work for as little money as possible
What does stewardship mean?
That Christians should exploit the world and other people as much as possible
That Christians should take care of the environment and not spoil it
That it is wrong for Christians to make use of anything that the world has to offer
What does the sanctity of life mean?
That human life is sacred and should be protected
That human life can be exploited
That each individual should only think about him/herself
What did Jesus tell his followers to do?
"Love your neighbour as yourself"
"Don't think about other people"
"Exploit all the resources of the world"
What did the good people in the Parable of the Sheep and the Goats do for which they were rewarded?
They made a profit with the money they had been given
They planted and grew crops
They cared for other people in need
What is the aim of Liberation Theology?
To get prisoners released from jail
To end poverty
To get enemy forces out of a country
