The plot of the play is based around the romantic relationships of three couples.
They share a loving marriage although it is not without its conflict, brought on by Rosinella's character flaws. They are the guardians of their niece Lucia.
Their relationship develops from dislike, to friendship and finally to love.
They are passionately in love. Following Franco's death, Bridget cannot overcome her loss.
The relationship between Rosinella and Lucia is also key to the play.
Rosinella loves Lucia like a daughter. However, this love can be selfish and possessive.
