Tips to help you with your writing

Read through these notes before moving on to the written example on the next page which looks at describing a sibling's hobby.

1) Use's eandb' e, not justthaandbha

Tha and bha are useful when you are not using the definite article. For example:

  • Tha i snog an-diugh.
  • Bha i snog an-dè.

However, to develop your writing, you should try to use 's e and b' e. For example:

  • 'S e latha snog a th' ann an-diugh.
  • B' e latha snog a bh' ann an-dè.

2) Use conjunctions followed by the dependent form of the verb

For example:

  • Tha mi a' smaointinn gu bheil e feumail eòlas-obrach fhaighinn.
  • Tha e tàmailteach nach eil thu a' dol chun an dannsa.
  • Tha mi an dòchas gum bi mi a' dol a Ghlaschu an-ath-bhliadhna.
  • Chuala mi gun robh Ealasaid a' dol dhan oilthigh.
  • Chuala mi nach robh Anna a' dol dhan oilthigh.
  • Chunnaic mi an aimsir agus chanainn gur e latha math a bhios ann a-màireach.

Here are some examples from the four example texts which you can find within the Writing section:

  • 'S dòcha nach robh mi a' gealltainn gu leòr.
  • Tha agam ri dèanamh cinnteach gu bheil na sgeilpichean làn.
  • Bhiodh e math beagan uairean a bharrachd a bhith agam, seach gum biodh barrachd airgid agam.
  • Tha na cuirmean a' còrdadh rium a chionn 's gu bheil iad trang agus spòrsail.
  • Ach, bu chòir dhomh a bhith laghach agus a chuideachadh air eagal agus gum bi e ainmeil agus beairteach latha brèagha air choreigin!
  • Cha deach mi fhèin a-riamh dhan chòisir seach nach eil guth seinn agam idir!

3) Try to use Gaelic idioms to make your writing more expressive

  • Latha brèagha air choireigin - One fine day
  • 'S e latha nan seachd sian a th' ann - The weather is extremely rough today
  • Cho tiugh ri bonn mo bhròig - As thick as the sole of my shoe
  • Cho bodhar ri stalla - As deaf as a doorpost
  • Cho sgìth ri seann chù - Dog tired
  • Bha mo shròn ann an leabhar - I had my nose in a book
  • Cho cruaidh ri creig - Rock hard.
