Religious changes in Scotland

Henry VIII wanted to marry Anne Boleyn, but was already married to Catherine of Aragon. Henry was a Catholic and he would be forced to go against his religions traditions on marriage to marry Anne.

The Reformation in Europe and Henry's divorce caused huge changes to the Church in Scotland and England in the 1500s.

Siobhan Redmond describes the Reformation in Europe 1517 in the video below.

The Reformation in Europe 1517

Martin Luther, a German monk, protested about practices within the Catholic Church.

This protest movement spread throughout Europe, with its supporters being known as Protestants. The movement as a whole was known as the Reformation.

Anne Boleyn

Henry VIII wanted to marry Anne Boleyn, but was married to Catherine of Aragon. This caused changes to the Church in Scotland and England.

In 1533, Henry VIII broke with the Church and married the now pregnant Anne Boleyn in a secret ceremony.

England was now a Protestant country and these ideas began to spread to Scotland.
