Practical questions

You will complete 21 required practical activities for GCSE Combined Science - Synergy.

There will be a number of different types of practical based questions. Some will be on the set required practicals, some will cover the working scientifically terms and some will be on other science practicals which you might have done in class. Use all the information given in the question particularly any diagrams to help you understand what the question is about.

Sample question 1 - Foundation

Question

A newtonmeter measures the weight of an object.

A newton meter showing the force of 5.5 N

What is the weight of the object? [1 mark]

5.5 (N) [1]

Sample question 2 - Foundation

Question

Describe how you could find the magnetic field pattern of a permanent bar magnet. [3 marks]

Either:

  • use iron filings [1]
  • on a piece of paper [1]
  • over the magnet [1]

or

  • use (plotting) compasses [1]
  • around the magnet [1]
  • with the needle showing the direction [1]

Sample question 3 - Higher

Question

The image shows apparatus set up by a student.

Apparatus needed to generate a magnetic field around an electrical wire

Closing the switch creates a force that acts on the wire XY.

Explain why a force acts on the wire XY when the switch is closed. [3 marks]

Closing the switch makes a current through the wire [1].

The current flowing creates a magnetic field around the wire [1].

This field interacts with the permanent magnetic field [1].

Sample question 4 - Higher

Question

Below, the diagram shows apparatus set up by a student.
