Das Neujahrskonzert der Wiener Philharmoniker is the name of the annual New Year's Day concert performed by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The concert has been an annual event since 1939 and is now broadcast live to an estimated 50 million people in 90 countries from the spectacular Musikverein in the Austrian capital Wien (Vienna).
Tickets for the famous concert are always in great demand, and because of the great interest – wegen der großen Interesse – are drawn by lot at the beginning of each year.
A variety of music is played, mainly by Austrian composers such as the Strauss family, Mozart, Schubert and von Suppe. The famous An der schönen blauen Donau by Johann Strauss II is a firm favourite. The final piece is always der Radetzky-Marsch by Johann Strauss I. During the piece – während des Stückes – the audience clap along and stamp their feet under the conductor's direction.
