Preparation and research

The purpose of a group discussion is to exchange and share ideas and opinions freely on a specific subject. As a group you will need to show your ability to:

  • communicate confidently with one another
  • discuss all perspectives
  • reach a conclusion

To succeed, therefore, each group member will need to:

  • present and exchange information
  • listen and respond to others' contributions
  • express an opinion and support that opinion with evidence or reasons

With this in mind, you can begin to plan and prepare your discussion.

Once you have chosen your subject, you can start to plan what you are going to say. You could list a number of bullet points or draw a spider diagram to help you. Alternatively, you could brainstorm your ideas for and against a specific point or the advantages and disadvantages of a particular situation.

Once you have decided on the main points for discussion, you will need to do some research. Remember to record your sources as you will need to make reference to them when giving reasons to support your opinion.

  • The Welsh word for research is ymchwil.
  • The verb, to research is ymchwilio.
  • The Welsh expression for to look for information is chwilio am wybodaeth.
  • You may need to use these words during the discussion.

There are a number of different methods of researching, eg:

  • chwilio ar y we – to search on the internet
  • mynd ar y we – to go on the internet
  • ymweld â – to visit
  • siarad â – to talk to
  • sgwrsio â – to chat to
  • cyfweld – to interview
  • gofyn i – to ask
  • darllen – to read
