Where and when is your event?

If you wanted to arrange a party, you could ask your friends:

Ydych chi eisiau trefnu parti? – Do you want to arrange a party?

Beth am drefnu parti? – How about arranging a party?

Your friends could answer:

  • Ydw. – Yes, I do.
  • Ydyn. – Yes, we do.
  • Nac ydw. – No, I don’t.
  • Nac ydyn. – No, we don’t.
  • Efallai. – Maybe.
  • Syniad da! – Good idea!
  • Yn anffodus… – Unfortunately…

You will then need to choose a venue and arrange a time.

The Welsh word for centre is canolfan, which is a feminine noun. As feminine singular nouns mutate after y you would have to say y ganolfan if you wished to refer to the centre.

Question

Translate the following sentences into Welsh – but remember – there is always a soft mutation after am:

  • How about Martyn’s house?
  • How about the leisure centre?
  • How about holding the party at the bowling centre?
  • How about Martyn’s house? – Beth am dŷ Martyn
  • How about the leisure centre? – Beth am y ganolfan hamdden?
  • How about holding the party at the bowling centre? – Beth am gynnal y parti yn y ganolfan fowlio?

You could ask for your friends’ opinions by asking:

  • Beth ydych chi’n feddwl? – What do you think?(plural/polite)
  • Beth wyt ti’n feddwl? – What do you think?(singular)

  • Beth ydych chi’n feddwl o’r syniad? – What do you think of the idea? (plural/polite)

  • Ydych chi’n hapus gyda’r syniad? – Are you happy with the idea?

You can use these expressions throughout the whole process of arranging an event – whenever you want to ask for someone else’s opinion.
