Homeostasis

Greg Foot explains the role of the hormone ADH on the permeability of the kidney tubules - regulating the water levels in the body

Homeostasis maintains optimal conditions for metabolism throughout the body, as well as all cell functions. In the human body, these include the control of:

  • blood glucose concentration
  • body temperature
  • water levels

These automatic control systems may involve nervous responses from the nervous system or chemical responses from the endocrine system.

curriculum-key-fact
Homeostasis is important in animals to maintain a constant internal environment in response to internal and external changes.

Nervous system

The human nervous system consists of:

  • the central nervous system (CNS) – made from the brain and spinal cord
  • the peripheral nervous system – nerve cells that carry information to or from the CNS
