Rights and responsibilities

The American Declaration of Independence stated that Americans have ‘unalienable rights’, which all branches of government must respect and protect.

It reads:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.The American Declaration of Independence

The job of government is to protect those freedoms that every American citizen possesses by virtue of his/her existence.
