Most elements are rarely found in their pure form. They are found chemically combined with other elements in compounds. Compounds are often found mixed with other compounds. Mixtures may be separated and analysed.
Filtration is used to separate an insoluble solid from a liquid – sand from water for example.
1. One beaker contains a mixture of solid and liquid. The other contains a funnel with filter paper.
2. The solid and liquid mixture is poured into the filter funnel.
3. The filter paper holds back the solid particles while allowing the liquid to drip through.
