Like Hieroglyphics and All That Glisters, Dear Santa is told in first-person narrative from the perspective of the main character, Alison. In common with many of Donovan's short stories. Dear Santa is an interior monologue, which allows the reader to understand the perspective of Alison. Her thoughts are captured in her own accent which locates the story in Glasgow. The title reveals that the story is set at Christmas time.
