Like the relationship between Clare and her father in All That Glisters, Sandra and Amy’s relationship is a loving one.
Although Sandra is tired from working and Christmas, she patiently responds to her daughter’s excitable questions. Sandra’s protection of Amy is possibly a result of them being a small family unit, as the story mentions no father or other siblings.
Sandra reminds Amy to say thank you when she is given a coin as a present, emphasising to her daughter the importance of manners. Although parents can make an impact on their children’s values and beliefs, Amy’s insistence on helping the homeless man suggests that she is capable of forming her own opinion.
