A power (also known as an index or exponent) is a way of writing a number that has been multiplied by itself:

- \(2 \times 2\) can be written as 2
^{2}(two squared) - \(2 \times 2 \times 2\) can be written as 2
^{3}(two cubed) - \(2 \times 2 \times 2 \times 2\) can be written as 2
^{4}(two to the power of 4), and so on

The small floating digit is known as the **power**, **index number** or **exponent**.
