Tibet was occupied by China in 1950. Since that date there has been an on-going struggle between the Chinese authorities and those who wish to see the return of an independent Tibet.
In recent years there has been widespread protest within Tibet against the destruction of Tibetan culture and the treatment of the Tibetan people. Many Tibetans have been arrested and numerous incidents of torture and murder have been recorded by Amnesty International. Tibetan leader, the Dalai Lama, remains in exile. He now advocates a middle way with Beijing, seeking autonomy but not independence. In February 2014 he met with President Obama to discuss Tibet.
The Chinese leadership were unhappy with President Obama's decision to meet the Dalai Lama. It was claimed this would increase tensions within Tibet.
