Communist Party control in China

To retain its grip on power the CPC is ruthless in its treatment of internal opposition. Arrest and detention without trial, and long prison sentences or worse, are all part of the way the CPC controls dissent.

The media of China is strictly controlled. Newspapers, radio and television are state regulated. access to the internet is closely controlled. In the past, sites such as the BBC have been blocked. There has been disagreement between internet search engine company Google and the Chinese authorities who have attempted to use Google as a way of monitoring internet use.

The CPC also retains control of the army and a hugely expanded police force.
