Further criticism of China's human rights record

Tibet

Tibet was occupied by China in 1950. Since then there has been an on-going struggle between the Chinese authorities and those who wish to see the return of an independent Tibet.

In recent years there has been widespread protest within Tibet against the destruction of Tibetan culture and the treatment of the Tibetan people.

Many Tibetans have been arrested and numerous incidents of torture and murder have been recorded by Amnesty International.

Falun Gong

Followers of Falun Gong

Falun Gong is a peaceful, spiritualist movement. It was founded in 1992. Spreading quickly, it was believed to have as many as 70 million followers by 1999.

The Chinese government says Falun Gong is an 'evil cult' and the movement has been banned.

There has been a huge propaganda campaign against Falun Gong's teachings and the authorities have cracked down on those actively practising them.

According to human rights groups, supporters of Falun Gong have been harassed, imprisoned and brutally tortured.
