Solving inequalities

If an inequality isn't as straightforward as x \textgreater a, or y \textgreater b, you will need to rearrange the inequality to be able to solve it.

We rearrange inequalities in almost exactly the same way as we solve equations, but always keeping the inequality in place of the {=} sign.

Example

Solve the inequality:

5y + 1 \textless 26

First, you need to get the y values on their own, so subtract 1 from each side to give:

5y \textless 25

To find y, divide both sides by 5 to give:

y \textless 5
