Joy’s sister Myra phones and visits. Her arrival is like an invasion. Joy is afraid of her and does not want to see her.
We learn that Myra abused Joy as a child. Both Myra and their mother got pregnant at the same time. Joy explains that:
Myra's baby died. I didn't. Maybe that was why she hit me so much
Myra gets drunk and screams in Joy’s ear that she is a
callous bitch. Joy escapes the house and phones ex-boyfriend Paul to come and rescue her. Paul hangs up on her.
The next day Myra becomes emotional. She asks to come again but Joy refuses. She feels unable to acknowledge Myra as her sister. Despite the problems Myra has caused her, Joy feels guilty as if she is to blame for things going wrong in their relationship.
