Using the pluperfect tense of verbs with ĂȘtre

The pluperfect tense with ĂȘtre is used with the MR R VANS TRAMPED verbs (as seen in the perfect tense with ĂȘtre.)

Also you need to make sure the past participle agrees with the subject pronoun, for example, ĂȘtre with aller (to go):

  • j'Ă©tais allĂ©(e)
  • tu Ă©tais allĂ©(e)
  • il Ă©tait allĂ©
  • elle Ă©tait allĂ©e
  • on Ă©tait allĂ©(e)(s)
  • nous Ă©tions allĂ©(e)s
  • vous Ă©tiez allĂ©(e)(s)
  • ils Ă©taient allĂ©s
  • elles Ă©taient allĂ©es

Here are a few example sentences:

  • j'Ă©tais allĂ©e en France avant de partir Ă  l'universitĂ© - I had gone to France before leaving for university
  • ils ont dit qu'elle Ă©tait rentrĂ©e trĂšs tard - they said that she had come back very late
  • vous Ă©tiez dĂ©jĂ  parties quand je me suis levĂ© - you had already left by the time I got up
