Significance of a place of worship

A church is central to the Christian faith, and it is where the community comes together to worship and praise God.

The church is:

  • the place of worship for all Christians
  • where the community gathers
  • where works of charity are carried out
  • a place of healing
Let us be concerned for one another, to help one another to show love and to do good. Let us not give up the habit of meeting together, as some are doing. Instead, let us encourage one another all the more, since you see that the Day of the Lord is coming nearer.Hebrews 10:24-25

For Christians gathering together as a community for worship is key and based on the Gospel of Matthew. Jesus taught that when people gathered together to worship him, then he would be present. This is one reason why Catholics believe that Jesus is truly present in the Mass.

For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.Matthew 18:20

Having a place of worship is important for Christians as it provides the opportunity to feel closer to God, to meet other Christians with the same beliefs and to feel like a part of a community of believers who regularly come together to express their faith.
