Area of quadrilaterals

To calculate the area of quadrilaterals, we need to know two of the basic area formulae.

\[Area\,of\,a\,rectangle = length \times breadth\]

\[Area\,of\,a\,triangle = \frac{1}{2} \times base \times height\]

Question

Calculate the area of the rectangle shown below.

Diagram of a 7cm x 5cm rectangle

\[A = l \times b\]

\[= 7 \times 5\]

\[= 35c{m^2}\]

Question

Calculate the area of the triangle shown below.

Diagram of a 6cm x 8cm right-angled triangle

\[A = \frac{1}{2}bh\]

\[= \frac{1}{2} \times 8 \times 6\]

\[= \frac{1}{2} \times 48\]

\[= 24c{m^2}\]
