Numerous views from children on what they think a friend is, how they should behave towards each other, be it caring, trusting or playing and what they would like in a friend.

Useful as an example of how children define the word 'friend'. Pupils could work in small groups and come up with their own definition. Ask: "What does it mean to be a good friend? Is it possible to have a bad friend? Are friends important and necessary?" Challenge pupils to share what they think their lives would be like without any friends. As a follow-up activity, pupils could create a profile about a good friend they have. This could include a picture and an example showing good things they have done for them.
