This could be used as a stimulus for discussion on the uses of metal for everyday uses. Students could carry out a card sort, matching metals to a list of potential uses. They could research uses of gold in industrial, electronic and medical applications, considering the properties of gold that have led to its use in each case. Relate gold's relative unreactivity to its atomic properties and its position in the periodic table.
