A director discusses how students become more interested in Shakespeare if they relate it to real-life situations. This is then demonstrated by a group of students who perform an alternative version of Act 1 Scene 4 from 'Romeo and Juliet' set in an aerobics class.
Ask students to pick out the sections of dialogue from the same scene and encourage them to come up with an idea for a modern setting. Then create an open discussion about the meaning of the lines, encouraging everyone to offer their own interpretation. Ask them to create an improvisation (making sense of their lines) and once they have improvised and gained more understanding of their character, ask them to write their own version of the lines.
Additionally, students could then read the actual scene and explore how their interpretation of the meaning, compares with Shakespeare's.
