Samantha Cristoforetti, an Italian astronaut, explains what life is like on board the International Space Station for astronauts. She has previously returned from a 200 day mission and describes the feeling of weightlessness on a daily basis. Tim Peake and Samantha discuss the effects on an astronauts’ body during extended time in space, such as reduced bone density, loss of calcium, loss of muscle mass including the heart shrinking. They show video clips of them exercising on a daily basis, to try and counteract these possible harmful side-effects. The physical practicalities of exercising in space are shown in numerous video clips.
