A farm on the Holderness coastline in Yorkshire is being lost to the sea. The erosion has been significantly worse since defences were built further down the coast. The Holderness coastline is the fastest eroding coastline in Europe. A farm on the edge of the cliff is being lost to the sea and the owners are set to lose everything as insurance companies refuse to insure the land and property. Look at the factors which affect the rate of erosion on a coastline. Students should identify which factors are human and which are physical. Discuss coastal defences and how they can alter the rate of erosion further along the coast and use this to link erosion and deposition processes. Students could suggest which types of defences in Mappleton would have the greatest impact further up the coast and why.
