An introduction to division with remainders, illustrated with a real life problem. If 21 children need to get across a river but each boat holds only 5 children, how many boats will be needed?

This could be used as a prompt for a problem-solving activity and could be extended to alternative scenarios or using larger numbers. Also, a series of questions could be asked - initially ask the pupils to solve 21 divided by 5, then ask the same question as a word problem. The children could discuss how you would write the answer differently.
