A reproduction of the daily work of coal miners' wives. With a lack of modern appliances, women are shown washing clothes by hand, preparing food and collecting water from the local standpipe.

Students could create a spidergram detailing the work of women in coal mining households. Pupils could be encouraged to form a supported opinion as to whether women's work was more demanding than the men's in a coal mining community. Learners could compare the work of housewives in the 1920s with today and discuss in groups how far modern women's lives have improved.
