The views of a Paisley employer are heard on the extent to which the immigrant population was willing to assimilate into Scottish society.

Ask the class in groups to write down as many questions as they can think of, prompted by the clip. Hopefully these might include why the Irish community was in Paisley, why it mattered that they were Roman Catholics, whether they had jobs and were rich or poor. After some explanation, pupils could speculate about the future of the community and then go on to investigate what happened to a local individual who arrived in Britain in the later 19th century.
