Reflective clothes help you to be more visible in the dark when a light source is present, such as car headlights. Different colours reflect different amounts of light. Certain colours and materials are chosen to be more reflective in the dark. Retroreflectors in clothes and road signs are used to reflect light along the path from which it originates, making it seem brighter.
Children may be provided with a variety of materials and a torch to predict and investigate which ones are the most reflective. A further activity may involve bringing in their winter coats to see which ones are reflective. Pupils may be inspired to design posters encouraging people to wear reflective clothing when cycling or walking at night.
