Algorithms are defined as a set of rules or a sequence of instructions which must be followed. Algorithms can be written as a flow diagram with questions that require the answer yes or no. To demonstrate how a flowchart works, Nate follows an algorithm to set off an explosion safely. He must answer yes or no to questions such as, 'Is the area safe?', and follow instructions such as, 'wait two seconds'. Children should be advised not to try the experiment at home.

Children could write their own algorithms for an everyday task using a flow diagram. The task could be simple, such as how to have a shower, or more complex, such as how traffic lights could be controlled.
