How to measure the length of a piece of wood, a python and a football pitch. The approximation of length is discussed before a demonstration of how to record the measurement using different units: centimetres, metres and kilometres. Different tools are used for the measurements: a ruler, a tape measure and a trundle wheel.

Students could choose appropriate tools and units to measure various objects and spaces. For example, they could find the length of various objects in the classroom, or the length of perimeter of the playground. To add difficulty, students could be asked to record their finding in different units, such as centimetres and metres.
