Animations of atoms of carbon and oxygen to show how a covalent bond is formed. They discuss how covalent bonding is the sharing of electrons. Only the formation of single bonds is mentioned. A summary of the differences between ionic bonding and covalent bonding is given at the end.
This clip could be used to introduce the concept of covalent bonding. Before playing the clip, encourage students to copy the following passage into their notebooks. 'In ionic compounds, the atoms [.......] electrons. In covalent compounds, the atoms [...] electrons.' Subsequently, encourage students to use the clip to fill in the blanks. Discuss the strength of covalent bonds and the weak attraction between covalent molecules that result in low melting and boiling points. Compare this to the very high melting and boiling points of giant covalent network structures.
