The topic of cycling and its popularity in Germany and Berlin in particular is introduced in English. In Germany, year 4 students have to take a cycling proficiency test and we meet some of these students. They demonstrate how to check a bike is safe, before practising for and taking their cycling proficiency test.

This clip could be used to introduce words for means of transport and road safety. Students could label the parts of a bicycle using diagrams or pictures. Students could be given pictures of people on bicycles with safety clothing missing and comment on them in German. Students could compare cycling in Germany and cycling in Britain. Are any of the students cycling to school? Students could use the phrase 'ich fahre mit ...' and discuss how they travel to school, home or what mode of transport they take on holiday.
