If the Picts had lost, Scotland might never have existed. You may want to encourage students to discuss the existence and role of early Scottish communities who had ambitions for independence long before Robert the Bruce. This is a good starting point for students to research and investigate how the Picts became the dominant nation in Northern Britain. Students should consider the extent to which early Pict characteristics still exist in Scottish national identity today.
