The knock-on effects of being homeless can make it difficult to improve your situation. Without a fixed address it becomes difficult to eat healthily, wash clothes and apply for jobs. A case study of one previously homeless man compares the pros and cons of both social housing and the private sector. This clip was made in 2006 when property prices were rising quickly.

This clip can be used to demonstrate and stimulate discussion on the effects of the economic downturn. Pupils could brainstorm other effects as well as homelessness. The clip could also be used to introduce an exercise on economic budgeting. Ask pupils to budget their lives living in a council house with benefits, and then budget their lives renting in the private sector with the same income. This would demonstrate the value of the welfare system in Britain.
