Jimmy Doherty takes a tour of a salad producer’s farm to see how they stop insects getting into the bags of salad. He finds out about some of the natural growing strategies and clever technology that they use to fight the bugs whilst cutting down on pesticides.
This clip could be used to illustrate how food can be contaminated with insects, and strategies to reduce this, including the use of pesticides in growing crops, and the use of computer control and high technology solutions within food manufacture.
It could generate discussion on food processing and what happens to our food within food factories. This may form part of a larger independent study on the pros and cons of a pesticide-free approach for the consumer and the environment.
