An audio clip set to archive stills of a BBC reporter describing the computer used to assist with vote counting during the 1955 general election. No single machine can claim to be 'the first computer'. The first electronic computers were large and costly, and were used for mainly military purposes - e.g. the code-breaking machine, ‘Colossus’, during World War Two.
This clip could be used as an introduction to the use of computers. Students could further research the development of the computer, creating a timeline as to how it has impacted on our lives and the way we work.
