Bob Marley and The Wailers perform ‘Stir it up’ written by Bob Markey in 1967. This clip is taken from a session filmed for the BBC series 'The Old Grey Whistle Test' in 1973. It was the first time the band had visited the UK and the song became their first big success. Reggae started in Jamaica and developed in the late 1960s as a mix of Calypso, Jazz and Rhythm and Blues. The music has a laid back feel, with bass and drums create the rhythm, with strong accents on the 2nd and 4th beats of a bar. Features the following concepts – voice, off the beat, backing vocals, chorus, electric guitar, verse, bass guitar, accented, solo, repetition, drum kit, hi-hat cymbals.

This clip could be used as an introduction to reggae music. Learners could discuss the prominence of the off-beat, the instrumentation and the structure of the song. They could go on to do a group performance of this song or another well-known reggae song.
