Ask students what their understanding of average is then go on to explore the more specific terms and explain the differences between them. Use the example of a cumulative frequency table as an example of one method of dealing with large amounts of data and a means of helping eliminate error. Use the students’ knowledge of different types of average when looking at real life averages and statistics. Discuss how different averages can portray the same information to give different messages.
