A look at the bitter industrial dispute at the Penrhyn slate quarry in 1900. The strike led to a lockout one year later as the workers went on strike for a fairer wage. It had a terrible effect on the local community and was not resolved until 1903.
This clip could be used to look at the reasons behind the Penrhyn Lockout and the adverse effect the protest had on the local community. Students could look at conditions in the slate quarrying areas in the 1900s and answer the following questions: 1. Why was there such a difference between the living conditions of the quarry men and their masters? 2. Why was there a strike in Bethesda? 3. How did the working families live?
