Huw Edwards in a shopping centre on a Sunday discusses the decline in Christian religious worship in Wales. Huw looks at the corresponding rise in consumerism and materialism and postulates that these are taking over where religion declines.
Show students the clip and then ask them to use the information within it to define the words 'materialism' and 'consumerism'. Share with them Descartes' philosophical proposition: "I think therefore I am" and get them to consider why some argue that in today's world that should be changed to "I shop therefore I am". Allow students to explore the question whether we are defined by what we think or what we own. Explore religious teachings around possessions.
