An exploration of the conditions of poverty in Victorian Wales and the link to the use of child labour in the coal mines. The clip shows the underground working conditions for children at the Big Pit Museum.
Students could research the history of the coal industry or look at child labour through the years. Pupils could discuss why conditions were so bad and try to imagine what it must have been like working for twelve hours a day, often for just two pennies. They could then create diary entries documenting their responses.
