Illegal immigrants attempting to cross to the USA from Mexico face a number of barriers. Those who attempt the crossing are looking for better paid jobs and a higher quality of living. Education, better housing, welfare payments and safe political participation also draw people to the USA.

Following the clip, students may wish to undertake further research into government responses to illegal immigration which could lead to a wider class debate on immigration in the USA. Students could be encouraged to take notes during the class debate, which could help with a written extended response to the following: 'Assess the view that Hispanic immigration is a big political issue in the USA.'
Students may want to look in more detail at how much immigration is having an impact on political representation in the USA.
