According to a museum in Hull, William Wilberforce was central to the struggle to end slavery, but is this interpretation correct? Was Wilberforce so central to abolition? Students give other reasons that help to explain why slavery ended. This in turn underlines the museum's position as an interpretation of events.
This clip could be used to demonstrate to students that museums are themselves interpretations of the past. After watching this clip the students could be tasked with investigating why a museum in Hull would focus on Wilberforce. Another set of students could be challenged with working out what interpretation a London-based or Jamaican-based museum might present about abolition.
