Even at primary school level, Chinese students are under great pressure to perform well academically. However, primary schools are also trying very hard to produce balanced and well-rounded young people. Therefore they provide after-school activities on Friday afternoons to encourage students to take part in hobbies such as traditional martial arts, Beijing Opera, and singing folk songs.
